Seven kinds of topics that never run out

• Tips from your expertise: what you know that customers don’t (a roofer: “Three things to check on your gutters before fall”).
• Answer a frequent question: if customers ask it on the phone, other readers want to know too.
• Common mistakes and myths: “what not to do” is one of the most-read formats.
• How to choose: compare options from the reader’s point of view, not yours.
• Customer stories: with permission, show the problem and how it was solved.
• Behind the scenes: sourcing, preparation, the people and the care that customers never see.
• Seasonal topics: needs that come with the month, such as back to school, tax season or holiday prep.

Turning an idea into an issue

Once you have a topic, build the issue in three steps: state the reader’s problem in one sentence, give two or three concrete answers or tips, and end with a single sentence on how you can help. Keeping the promotion to that last line makes people look forward to the next issue.

You won’t use all ten at once. Put them in a simple content calendar: use the seasonal ideas in their month and save the evergreen ones for months with less going on. Ten ideas a month is enough to plan a whole year.
