What the checker looks for

  • Sender identification: your business name, so recipients can tell who the email is from.
  • A valid physical postal address: a street address, a P.O. box, or a private mailbox registered with a commercial mail receiving agency.
  • A clear and conspicuous way to opt out, such as an unsubscribe link, that keeps working for at least 30 days after you send.

What it can't check

The checker looks for text patterns, so unusual wording can be missed or misread. Check a real test email rather than your template, since merge fields can come out empty.

  • Whether your From, To and Reply-To headers and your subject line are accurate.
  • Whether email sent without prior consent is clearly identified as an advertisement.
  • Whether you honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. Each separate email in violation can cost up to $53,088, according to the FTC.
